Topic: Jonathan Livingston Seagull Date: 1-3-2006 Page 2 In 1971 I was working at the Mental Health Clinic in Boulder, Colorado. At one of the staff meetings, a co-worker read a passage from "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" by Richard Bach. My well woren 1971 copy is here on my desk. In the 35 years since that purchase, I have understood some measure of the books appeal to me and the influence of the book's message on me. More from Jonathan in later writings. I believe that there is a "core" of truths embedded within layers of historical writings, denominational beliefs, doctrines, and religious practices. I do not remember when this concept dawned on my perceptions of life. I suspect, it came in gradually from several sources and sat in my preconscious until there was an opening upward. I do remember sitting in the last pew in my church on a Sunday morning, when, in response to the preacher's question, "what do the people of the world need", a still small voice said, "understanding". I lost track of the preacher's voice and my mind was filled with the solutions "understanding" would provide for the world and its people. Many years later when I began doing workshops, I always started the workshop by reading from "Jonathan Livingston Seagull". From those workshops, came my 2 books, Fortune Cookies, Receipt for Master in Traing, I and II. Book Store It seems fitting for me to start my Insights and Inspirations Blog, with the quote I used to started my workshops. Jonathan Livingston Seagull pp 84-85 By Richard Bach "As the days went past, Jonathan found himself thinking time and again of the Earth from which he had come. If he had known there just a tenth, just a hundredth, of what he knew here, how much more life would have meant! He stood on the sand and fell to wondering if there was a gull back there who might be struggling to break out of his limits, to see the meaning of flight beyond a way of travel to get a bread crumb from a rowboat. Perhaps there might even have been one made Outcast for speaking his truth in the face of the Flock. And the more Jonathan practice his kindness lessons, and the more he worked to know the nature of love, the more he wanted to go back to Earth. For in spite of his lonely past, Jonathan Seagull was born to be an instructor, and his own way of demonstrating love was to give something of the truth that he had seen to a gull who asked only a chance to see truth for himself."
