The Power of Completeness
.......and the student approached the master, and bowing his
head, spoke of his confusion,
saying, “Master, I sense that something is incomplete, for
I lack the feeling of wholeness
that I observe in you. Yet I am doing and saying what I have been
taught since childhood.
There is not one who can accuse me of disobeying the law, or being
ill-mannered, or of
speaking wrongly to another. I am doing what is right, yet I feel
hollow and alone. My
heart does not feel alive with the pleasure and joy that I observe
in you. What am I
missing?” The Master replied, “long have I watched you
and waited for your heart to ask
this question, you sought to learn love and to do that which has
been expected of you by
your family, community, and religion. You have indeed learned
the words and done the
works that others respect, but your heart hot opened to the fullness
of human experience.
Without knowing the fullness of life, you create an imitation
of life. Life is know from the
experience of contrast and the understanding of duality –
for in the contrasts you will find
the completeness you seek .....THUS
You must experience your hatred and release your fear of it
before
you can completely love.
You must feel your anger and dance with it, before you can express
your passion.
You must go into the depth of your sorrow and cry your tears of
grief before you can feel joy and happiness in your heart.
You must come face to face with death and laugh at its falseness
before you can freely live.
You must meet your dark side and make it your friend before you
can
have compassion for the suffering of others.
You must face your rage and need for revenge, holding anther’s
life
in your hands, and walk away in forgiveness before you can know
the true
meaning of love and the power of your will.
......and when an evil acting person attacks you with criticism
and harmful
intentions, you step aside, knowing that the overt evil you see
in him may be the subtle
evils within your unacknowledged shadow self, thus allowing you
to feel compassion for
him rather than vengeful.
......You must love someone with all you desire, and when they
are gone go deeply
into your grief, and then have the courage to risk deeply relating
again.
......When you once again hold someone you loved but have not
seen in 40 years
and realize the timelessness of the heart, you will understand
that love never dies.
....When you have done these things you will understand the saying
that the meek
shall inherit the earth, and the door to your soul will begin
to open and the light of God
will begin to shine through you.
You must have lived in the dark to recognize the light. In these
experiences of
contrast you will learn the fullness of life and the completeness
you seek. Are you willing
to open your heart to your contrasting parts? And the student
departed in despair, thinking
to himself, “to learn what the mast has said would require
the experiencing of pain and
humiliation. It is easier to do the right things and be praised
by others for my virtues than
to suffer the distress of learning contrasts. Maybe I can live
satisfactorily with
incompleteness.” The student went home, never returning to
the master with his
questions. So when the student died in his old age, he was memorialized
as a holy and
saintly man, who had done what was expected of him by his family,
community, and
religion. And only the master knew that the student had imitated
life rather than lived life.
